20 Cleaning Tips that’ll make Your House Feel New Again

Do you love that fresh smell that comes after thoroughly cleaning your house? If you want to experience that feeling more often, here are 20 tips on how to keep your house looking new.

  1. Scrubbing and Cleaning your toilet properly - This one is a dirty job but it makes your whole house feel cleaner. Make sure to use the proper cleaners and scrub until it's sparkling clean.
  2. Remove built-up film from hard water that leads to cloudy glasses - This is not a hard task and you can do this for example with vinegar, lemon juice and salt. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and use it to clean your windows.
  3. Clean out your coffee maker - This is an important step in keeping your machine clean. Always be sure to remove the cord and any residue from the inside of the machine.
  4. Rethink and re-arrange your closet - Organize your closet so that you can easily see what is inside. This will save you both time and money.
  5. Clean your grout - There are many ways to do this but one of our favourites is with a toothbrush, baking soda and vinegar white solution.
  6. Unclog your shower head to restore its pressure - This is an easy fix that can be done with a rubber band and vinegar.
  7. Dust your blinds - Use a feather duster to get into all the nooks and crannies of your blinds.
  8. Stain-proof your carpets - A great way to do this is by using a solution of 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar.
  9. Clean your washing machine - This is key to getting your clothes clean and smelling fresh! Run an empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar through the bleach dispenser at least once a month.
  10. Organize your kitchen cabinets - Install easy-to-use drawer dividers to help you organize your pots, pans, and utensils.
  11. Keep your refrigerator clean - Wipe down the shelves and inside of the fridge every week with a damp cloth.
  12. Declutter your home - Start by going through one room at a time and getting rid of anything you don't need or use. Having less stuff will make your home feel cleaner and more organized.
  13. Refresh your shower curtain - Wash your shower curtain in the washing machine using regular detergent and one cup of white vinegar. Hang it up to dry completely before putting it back on the rod.
  14. Take off scuff marks from your wood flooring - Mix one part olive oil with three parts vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the scuff marks. Leave it for 10 minutes before wiping it up with a cloth.
  15. Erase marker stains from wood if you have kids - Put a few drops of shampoo on the stain and wipe with a cloth. If this fails, put a few drops of vinegar directly onto the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes before wiping up.
  16. Remove any sour odours from your bin - Add a couple of drops of peppermint oil to the garbage bag before you tie it up. The fresh scent will stay as long as your bag stays closed.
  17. Remove mildew from tile grout - Mix warm water with baking soda, then scrub away at the mildew until it starts to fade.
  18. Clean taps easily - Combine equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the taps and let them sit for a few minutes before wiping clean. Rinse off any residue with water.
  19. Get rid of unwanted odours from pets -  Sprinkle baking soda over your carpets and furniture, then vacuum it up after an hour. The baking soda will absorb the smells while also creating a fresh scent.
  20. Clean out your microwave -  Add a tablespoon of vinegar to a microwave-safe bowl with water, then heat it up for three minutes. The steam will help loosen any caked-on food or grease. Wipe down the inside of the microwave with a cloth, then rinse clean.
